Kindergarten open houses for parents and children beginning kindergarten in the fall of 2013 will be held at the three elementary schools in April. Activities for incoming kindergarten students include information booths from community agencies and a chance to meet teachers, practice bus rides, and see the school and classrooms.
Kindergarten registration for Moorhead Area Public Schools for the 2013-14 school year began Jan. 22 and 23, 2013. If parents were unable to register during the regular registration times they should contact the school as soon as possible to make other arrangements. Early registration is necessary so the schools can determine staffing for fall.
Parents interested in enrolling their children in the district’s Spanish Immersion Program should complete kindergarten registration at Ellen Hopkins Elementary School. For more information about the district’s Spanish Immersion Program, contact Mary Jo Schmid, Hopkins principal, at 284-4300.

All early childhood, kindergarten and Head Start classes at Probstfield Center for Education will be canceled on Thursday, November 15, 2012 due to a water main break. Repair work will require that water to the building be shut off for several hours. Employees should plan to report to work as regularly scheduled.
Moorhead Area Public Schools had 5,664 students in grades K-12 report for school this morning. This is 301 more students than were enrolled last spring and 201 students more than last year’s opening enrollment. The number of students in the district will fluctuate over the next few weeks before stabilizing in October and November, according to historical trends.
The most significant increase is in the kindergarten enrollment. The district added two additional kindergarten sections in August.
“The kindergarten enrollment is the highest since 1995,” said Superintendent Lynne Kovash. “Overall, this is the district’s largest enrollment increase in years.”
Kindergarten is the largest grade level with 492 students. Sixth grade is the second largest grade level with 458 students. At 407 students, grade 5 is the smallest grade level in the district.
Enrollment in the district’s Kinder Plus (K+) extended-day kindergarten program offered through Community Education has increased to 276, which is 43 students over last year’s opening enrollment.
“We are excited about the increase in enrollment at all levels,” Kovash said. “This two-year increase provides a strong enrollment base for the district in future years.”
Enrollment at Horizon Middle School increased to 1,311 student, which is 58 students more than last year’s opening enrollment. Moorhead High School’s opening day enrollment is 1,623, which is up 46 students from last year’s opening enrollment.
In 2006 the district saw the reversal of an 11-year trend of enrollment decline. This was followed by four years of increases in enrollment after efforts by the district to modernize and enhance the quality of education. The district’s enrollment was projected to stabilize in 2010 with slight increases over the next few years.
Relationships are key for Moorhead Area Public Schools’ three new elementary assistant principals, Michael Daugs, Jacob Scandrett and Travis Okerlund.
Daugs, assistant principal at Ellen Hopkins Elementary School, is already getting to know the students, staff and community and looks forward to continue developing these relationships. “I plan to use these relationships to develop the mission of our district while impacting our students’ learning and the community,” he said.
“The development of good relationships is foundational to the success of our students,” said Scandrett, assistant principal at Robert Asp Elementary. “The relationships we build each day with our kids influence their attitudes about learning, school and themselves,” he said.
Scandrett completed his master’s degree and teaching certification at Minnesota State University Mankato. He has taught science in Tracy, Minn., for the past five years and recently earned his specialist’s degree in educational leadership and his principal license from MSU Mankato.
Okerlund, assistant principal at S.G. Reinertsen Elementary, is eager to meet the students and teachers of Reinertsen when classes resume in September. “I also look forward to seeing so many different great teachers delivering strong lessons to hardworking students,” he said.
Okerlund graduated from Bemidji State University in elementary education and then moved to Las Vegas where he taught at the elementary level. He completed his master’s degree in educational leadership at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After five years away, he moved back to the area and has been teaching at the elementary level in West Fargo. He earned his specialist’s degree in educational leadership at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
Moorhead Area Public Schools added the elementary assistant principal positions this year to provide administrative support in part because of increased state requirements for the Reading Well plan and teacher evaluations. While the roles of the elementary assistant principals are still being defined, they will be assisting teachers with student data, working with student discipline, continuing to develop the K+ program in conjunction with Community Education, and supporting the implementation of the Reading Well plan.
