Two Moorhead Destination Imagination teams advance to Global Finals

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Two Moorhead Destination Imagination teams took top honors in the State Destination Imagination Tournament on April 20 in Champlin Park, Minn.

The DI Vinci’s, a ninth-grade Moorhead High team, placed first in Challenge B Wind Visible and received a Rennaisance award for Outstanding Design. The team had to research wind energy and incorporate it into an eight-minute presentation in which an “Invisible Visitor” sets something in motion. The team also had to create a piece of kinetic art that used wind energy to initiate and sustain motion for 15 seconds. The same team took third place in Improv, Challenge D Change in Realitee.

The Yards for Youth team of seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade Horizon Middle School and Moorhead High students took first in ProjectOutreach. The team members addressed a community need with their Yards For Youth sew-a-thon in which they sewed (with the help of volunteers) and donated 325 pillowcases to Sanford Children’s Hospital. The team had to make a movie on its project and incorporate a press conference into an eight-minute presentation.

Both teams will compete against teams from around the world at Global Finals on May 22-25.

Horizon students link learning to industry

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

Some Horizon Middle School students had a recent opportunity to connect what they were learning in the classroom to how it is used in industry during a presentation by Sam Wheeldon, a technical manager in charge of electrical design with John Deere Electronic Solutions.

Sam Wheeldon, a technical manager in charge of electrical design with John Deere Electronic Solutions, responds to a Horizon student’s question regarding switches on a circuit board.

Wheeldon discussed how switches are used in various devices that John Deere produces, and he brought some circuit boards with switches to show the students in two of Jacob Gunderson’s Science of Technology classes.

The Horizon students then used programming software to program and wire three different types of switches — push button, Reed and phototransistor — to turn on lights.

The presentation by Wheeldon was part of an initiative by Education Minnesota, the state’s educators union, to bring business leaders into classrooms.

Staff and students to GET LOUDER about bullying

Friday, October 26th, 2012

Moorhead Area Public Schools continues bullying prevention effort

On Oct. 30, students and staff members of Moorhead Area Public Schools will wear blue to GET LOUDER about bullying. Moorhead Area Public Schools launched the GET LOUDER effort last spring to help unite students, teachers and parents in a collaborative effort to prevent bullying within our community.

In the 1950s, students were influenced by family first, then school, church, peers and music/media. The influences have changed to music/media and peers, followed by family, school and church.

A former Moorhead teacher developed the idea of GET LOUDER in response to this question: Has social media and the influence of peers become so much louder — or have our voices become too quiet?

The idea was adopted by Moorhead Area Public Schools and the district’s Safe and Healthy Learners Committee last year. GET LOUDER is being used to galvanize district efforts to prevent bullying.

Tuesday’s GET LOUDER day is part of the district’s ongoing efforts to prevent bullying. Other efforts include presentations by Moorhead High School SADD students at the elementary schools and middle school, a bullying prevention section on the district website at www.moorhead.k12.mn.us, and an online course for district employees to learn more about bullying and prevention. Moorhead High students are also organizing a young adult awareness walk on Oct. 27 that ties in to the district’s overall prevention efforts.

Opening day enrollment numbers increase for Moorhead Area Public Schools

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Moorhead Area Public Schools had 5,664 students in grades K-12 report for school this morning. This is 301 more students than were enrolled last spring and 201 students more than last year’s opening enrollment. The number of students in the district will fluctuate over the next few weeks before stabilizing in October and November, according to historical trends.

The most significant increase is in the kindergarten enrollment. The district added two additional kindergarten sections in August.

“The kindergarten enrollment is the highest since 1995,” said Superintendent Lynne Kovash. “Overall, this is the district’s largest enrollment increase in years.”

Kindergarten is the largest grade level with 492 students. Sixth grade is the second largest grade level with 458 students. At 407 students, grade 5 is the smallest grade level in the district.

Enrollment in the district’s Kinder Plus (K+) extended-day kindergarten program offered through Community Education has increased to 276, which is 43 students over last year’s opening enrollment.

“We are excited about the increase in enrollment at all levels,” Kovash said. “This two-year increase provides a strong enrollment base for the district in future years.”

Enrollment at Horizon Middle School increased to 1,311 student, which is 58 students more than last year’s opening enrollment. Moorhead High School’s opening day enrollment is 1,623, which is up 46 students from last year’s opening enrollment.

In 2006 the district saw the reversal of an 11-year trend of enrollment decline. This was followed by four years of increases in enrollment after efforts by the district to modernize and enhance the quality of education. The district’s enrollment was projected to stabilize in 2010 with slight increases over the next few years.
