Have coffee with the superintendent during upcoming session

Dr. Lynne Kovash, superintendent of Moorhead Area Public Schools, has been vocal about the support the district receives from the community. During an upcoming session offered through Moorhead Community Education, Dr. Kovash will talk about your school district and your perspectives and ideas for continual improvement.

The session will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, in the Probstfield Center for Education board room, 2410 14th St. S., Moorhead.

Community Education offers summer athletic camps for youth

Moorhead Community Education is offering several summer athletic camps. Students will learn from Moorhead High School coaches and players. The summer athletic camps provide students an opportunity to have fun, enhance skills and make new friends.

Camps have varying starting dates. Volleyball camps are June 3-14 and wrestling camps are June 17-21 or June 3-July 29. Football camps are in June or July depending on grade level, and strength and speed camps are June 3-Aug. 1. Boys basketball camps are June 17-28, girls basketball camps are July 15-26, and boys and girls basketball camps for grades 1-3 are June 10-14. Register for Moorhead Community Education spring classes beginning Jan. 7

The new Moorhead Community Education spring catalog will be available Jan. 7, 2013, and includes more than 425 learning opportunities for people of all ages and interests. The starting dates of classes vary.

Spring classes include Unique Breakfast Foods and Freezer Meal Workshop and other cooking classes; computer classes; yoga and dance classes; woodworking, knitting and craft classes; Mosaic for Beginners and other arts and music classes; online classes you can take from home; beginning Japanese and other language classes; and Cash for College, The Lost Art of Letter Writing, An Afternoon Tea Party, House History, and many more.

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) will begin taking registrations for winter/spring classes on Jan. 7. Classes for parents and children ages infants through kindergarten entry include Storybook Science, Make It, Take It, Baby Connection, Wonderful, Wobbly Ones, Marvelous Math, Family Fun, and many more. ECFE classes are listed in the winter/spring Parenting Press newsletter and the spring Community Education catalog. Classes are open to all residents of Moorhead, Fargo, West Fargo and the surrounding area.

Moorhead residents and past participants receive a catalog in the mail. Moorhead residents with children ages birth to kindergarten entry who are on the school district census receive Parenting Press. Learn about Moorhead Area Public Schools during the ‘State of the District’

Superintendent Lynne Kovash and members of the district leadership team have a vision for Moorhead Area Public Schools and some concrete plans to move the district forward. Learn more during the “State of the District” session being offered Oct. 23 through Moorhead Community Education. The session will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in the Probstfield Center for Education Board Room, 2410 14th St. S., Moorhead.

A key topic of the presentation will be progress on the district’s operating levy priority areas and strategic priorities.

The new Moorhead Community Education fall catalog is available Aug. 24, 2012, and includes more than 300 learning opportunities for people of all ages and interests. The starting dates of classes vary, and classes are scheduled conveniently for those with busy lifestyles.

Fall classes include Savory Soups and other cooking classes; Holiday Letters and Labels and other computer classes; yoga and dance classes; wood working, leather working, knitting, crochet and craft classes; Outdoor Mosaic Sculpture and other arts and music classes; online classes you can take from home; beginning Japanese and Arabic language classes; and Cash for College, Ham Radio, and many more.

New this year, Moorhead Community Education is offering a number of classes free or at a reduced fee to active-duty service members and their families. Moorhead Area Public Schools is a collaborative partner supporting the efforts of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Moorhead, a program to connect service members and their families with community support, training, services and resources.

Musical Theater Camp presents “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” on June 27-28

Musical Theater Camp presents “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” Performances are at 7 p.m. June 27 and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. June 28 in the Moorhead High School auditorium, 2300 4th Ave. S., Moorhead.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and may be purchased at the door. All seats are general admission. For group reservation discount prices call Kelly Timm at 701-730-3882.
Musical Theater Camp, a collaborative project of Moorhead Community Education and Horizon Middle School Theater, is designed to provide a comprehensive musical theater experience for fifth to eighth graders in the Fargo-Moorhead area. During the four-week experience, the students study acting, dance and voice in preparation for performing “Beauty and the Beast Jr.”

Moorhead Community Education’s annual gardening seminar features Joe Bergeson

Moorhead Community Education, Master Gardeners of Clay County and University of Minnesota Extension Clay County are hosting the annual spring Gardening Seminar titled “Green, Growing and Grand” on Saturday, March 10 from 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. at Horizon Middle School.

This year’s gardening seminar features the presentation “The Future of Hardy Roses” by Joe Bergeson from Bergeson Nursery. The seminar also includes vendors, informative speakers and door prizes. Sessions include perennials, new annuals, landscaping, diseases of trees and shrubs, bee keeping, and outdoor yard/garden decorations.

A fee of $34 ($29 for Moorhead School District residents) covers the presentations, refreshments and a lunch buffet. Pre-registration is required. Registration deadline is March 7. Registration begins Jan. 24 for Kinder Plus program for 2012-13 school year

Kinder Plus (K+) is an extended-day program for kindergarten students offered through Moorhead Community Education. The program is an all-day option that includes the traditional half-day kindergarten curriculum with another half day of enrichment activities with licensed Community Education staff. A licensed teacher will engage children in enrichment activities and provide opportunities to develop language, math and social skills.

The enrichment half of the day is fee-based. K+ is designed to broaden, enrich and complement Moorhead Area Public Schools’ regular half-day kindergarten program. K+ is ideal for children who are ready for a longer day in a learning environment and is an alternative to traditional child care.

Classrooms are at Ellen Hopkins and Robert Asp Elementary. Students in the S.G. Reinertsen Elementary attendance area will attend kindergarten and K+ at Probstfield Center for Education.

Moorhead Community Education adds terrarium class on Jan. 19; two new woodworking classes begin Jan. 12 and Jan. 20

Moorhead Community Education has added the class Life Under Glass… Building a Terrarium. The class, which will be Jan. 19, is not included in the spring catalog.

Moorhead Community Education is offering a number of new classes this spring. Basic Accent Table begins Jan. 12 and Basic Woodworking begins Jan. 20. Many other classes begin the week of Jan. 23.
