GED graduates recognized at commencement ceremony

Friday, February 14th, 2014

On Feb. 6, Adult Basic Education’s graduation ceremony recognized 17 of the program’s 2014 GED graduates. ABE is a Community Education program of Moorhead Area Public Schools.

Two graduates shared their remarks at the commencement exercise. Ronald Melcher Jr. acknowledged that his graduation was 40 years in the making, and that while it took him a long time to finish, he didn’t quit and is proud of his accomplishment. Karlie Kemp tried public and online schools before starting at Adult Basic Education to prepare for her GED. She thanked the ABE teachers for their support and announced her plans to attend college in the fall.

Lauri Winterfeldt, Community Education director for Moorhead Area Public Schools, recognized the contributions of Marjo Lysne, GED coordinator, who is retiring after 29 at the helm of the GED program in Moorhead, and Bonnie Herman, Adult Basic Education program manager, who is retiring in August. Herman has been a part of 20 GED graduations in the district.

Winterfeldt reminded the graduates that Lysne, Herman and many other people — including the clerical staff registering them for testing, the ABE instructors, and the graduates’ family members and friends — supported them on their paths to attaining their GEDs.

“The world is full of people who want to be part of your success,” Winterfeldt said, encouraging the graduates to look for those people in the next phase of their lives. “We all want to watch you succeed because when we help someone else, we feel more successful ourselves.”

Winterfeldt reminded the graduates that it is not a burden to ask for support.

“It’s not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of strength when you can share your accomplishments with others,” she said.

Community Education Corner: Consider taking or teaching a Community Ed class

Monday, January 13th, 2014

The Community Education catalog is a unique publication in the community. Inside its covers are a wealth of learning opportunities. On the cover, we feature local people who use their time to teach classes for us.

Ed and Joyce Westfall are featured on Spring 2014 catalog cover. Until I met them, I didn’t know there was such a thing as a certified ballroom dance instructor. To receive this designation, Ed and Joyce had to learn more than 30 dances and be able to dance and teach both the lead and follow parts of each dance. The expertise required and the countless hours spent memorizing, training and practicing would be daunting to anyone but they persevered and we’re glad they did. How fortunate we are that there are people like this living in Moorhead who have such highly developed skills.

The previous cover featured our popular bread-making instructor Russ Hanson, a well-known local photographer. For several years, Russ has volunteered his talents to photograph our cover photos. Recently, he told me about his personal experiments in creating delicious and beautiful breads of every kind. He then offered to start teaching other community members what he has learned. His classes send the scent of bread wafting through the halls of Moorhead High School on the evenings he is teaching. I’m so grateful that he’s so willing to invest his time and energy into Community Education.

I’m often asked what it takes to teach for Moorhead Community Education. For our adult enrichment programs offered through our catalog, we look for people who are lifelong learners themselves. People who have a curiosity about a subject and have learned enough to develop their own expertise. We try to offer classes that will be of interest to others in the Moorhead-Fargo community. I can tell quickly from conversations with potential instructors how passionate they are about their subject. If they have that drive and commitment, you’re likely to find a class from them in our catalog.

By now, the Community Education catalog should have arrived in your mailbox. I encourage you to look inside and see your friends and neighbors who are teaching for us. Register for a Community Education class by calling 218-284-3400 or register online at https://communityed.moorheadschools.org. Also, consider if you have a unique skill or ability that others may enjoy learning. Perhaps you could be our next cover model.
