Moorhead School District residents will have six opportunities in September to learn more about the district, ask questions and share their thoughts. Meet and greet the Moorhead Spuds during the Spud Boosters’ ice cream social at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 in Jim Gotta Stadium at Moorhead High School. The fall athletes will be recognized, and a bonfire will follow the program. The ice cream social is thanks to Cass Clay Creamery and Rick Electric.
Moorhead School District voters will have an opportunity to vote November 2, 2010, on an operating levy referendum that, if approved, will provide the school district $850 per pupil in additional funds each year for the next seven years beginning with the 2011-12 school year.
A community of local farmers is committed to growing high quality food and preserving the environment. Moorhead Community Education is hosting a day trip to a farm near Fertile, Minn., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. The farm uses buggies for transportation, real horse power for plowing fields, and hands for cultivating.
Tour participants will board the bus at the Cash Wise parking lot in Moorhead at 9 a.m. Sept. 11. At the farm, participants will visit six acres of chemical-free gardens and tour the facilities. Locally grown produce will be available for purchase. The tour group also will visit the beautiful gardens at the nearby Bergeson Nursery, view the nursery’s fall displays and enjoy a boxed lunch. The group will return to the Cash Wise parking lot by 1 p.m.

Four candidates filed for the three four-year seats on the board. They are incumbent Bill Tomhave, incumbent Karin L. Dulski, incumbent Kristine Thompson, and Laurie Johnson. Three candidates filed for the two-year seat to fill an unexpired board term. They are Bryce Vincent Haugen, Sylvia Hernandez-Cruz and Trudy K. Wilmer. The Moorhead School Board is made up of seven residents of Independent School District 152 who are elected at large to four-year terms. Three board members’ terms expire at the end of 2010. Additionally in 2010 one resident will be elected to a two-year term to fulfill an unexpired board term. Seven school district residents filed for seats on the Moorhead School Board. During a special meeting Aug. 19, the School Board set the election for Nov. 2. The School Board election will be held in conjunction with the state general election.

Horizon Middle School New Student Registration
Middle school students in grades 6-8 who are new to the Moorhead School District should register for the 2010-11 school year during the upcoming new student registration. New student registration will be from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 19 in the Horizon Middle School counseling office, 3601 12th Ave. S., Moorhead.

Back-to-School Nights for elementary and middle school students and their families are scheduled for the Moorhead Area Public Schools.
Horizon Middle School will hold its Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, Aug. 31 as follows:
Grade 6: House meeting, 4-4:30 p.m.; Classroom visit, 4:30-5 p.m.; Principals present to grades 6 and 7, 5-5:30 p.m.
Grade 7: Principals present to grades 6 and 7, 5-5:30 p.m.; House meeting, 5:30-6 p.m.; Classroom visit, 6-6:30 p.m.
Grade 8: Principals present to grade 8, 6:30-7 p.m.; House meeting, 7-7:30 p.m.; Classroom visit, 7:30-8 p.m.
Ellen Hopkins Elementary School, Robert Asp Elementary School, and S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School will hold their Back-to-School Nights from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2. The Back-to-School Night for kindergartners at Probstfield Center for Education will be from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2.
Moorhead High School ninth-grade students will have orientation Aug. 10-12.
