Opportunities available for parents to learn about Spanish Immersion Program

Parents who are considering enrolling their children in the Moorhead School District’s Spanish Immersion Program are invited to learn more information about the program. Parent Question/Answer Sessions will be held during kindergarten registration on Jan. 26 and 27. Sessions will be held at 7:45 a.m., noon, and 4 p.m. each day. If parents would prefer, they are encouraged to meet with Dr. Mary Jo Schmid, Ellen Hopkins Elementary principal.


Parent meetings will provide parents with information about immersion education and the program at Hopkins Elementary. Parents will also have the opportunity to talk about their child’s specific interests and needs, as well as discuss their questions or concerns. Parents need to call the Hopkins office at 284-4300 to schedule their meeting.

Kindergarten registration for Moorhead Area Public Schools scheduled for Jan. 26-27, 2010

Kindergarten registration for the Moorhead Area Public Schools for the 2010-11 school year will be Jan. 26 and 27, 2010. Registration will be from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.


Parents should register at the school located within their elementary attendance area. Robert Asp Elementary is located at 910 11th St. N., Ellen Hopkins Elementary is at 2020 11th St. S., and S.G. Reinertsen Elementary is at 1201 40th Ave. S.


Children must be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2010. Parents should bring along a birth certificate, hospital record or baptismal record for proof of age.

Moorhead Highlights Dance Team holding Friends and Family Night

The Moorhead Highlights Dance Team’s 14th annual Friends and Family Night Celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday, January 25 in the Moorhead High School gym. Local dance programs, studios, colleges, and the Moorhead High Highlights will showcase their hard work. The evening will include the popular Guy/Girl Dance.

Admission is $5 for ages 5 and older. Funds generated from this event help pay for the team’s costumes.

Superintendent’s Message

Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe we have come to the end of the first decade of the 21st century. The changes over these years have been amazing. It was only a short time ago that we were considering Y2K and the changes that would bring. We have adapted, thrived and moved forward. As we look forward to 2010 we have much to consider.

Consider excellence. Moorhead Area Public Schools has a strong tradition of excellence. We have excellent programs, students, staff and teachers. We provide a foundation of excellence and work every day to uphold the values and principles of excellence. We are a creative, energetic and enthusiastic staff focused on students and learning.

Consider resilience. We’ve had some challenges in the last year, but those challenges were faced with dignity and respect for one another. The economic challenges we face are ones that school districts in our state and nation are facing. Things have not always been easy, but together we adapt and change to maintain our focus.

Consider our focus. Our focus is educating learners. It is important to create a thirst for knowledge. We need to create a new generation of thinkers, observers and doers. We need connected students. Many of our students will live into the 22nd century. Our job is to continually work to prepare them for their world, a world we cannot even imagine. We need a generation ready to take on the challenges of our world.

I am excited about the possibilities ahead and grateful for the dedication of our community of educators, parents and community members. It is my hope in 2010 that we all meet challenges head on and work together to become even stronger and more resilient.

Register for Moorhead Community Education spring classes

The new Moorhead Community Education spring catalog will be available Jan. 5, 2010, and includes more than 350 learning opportunities for people of all ages and interests. The starting dates of classes vary and many are scheduled conveniently for those with busy lifestyles.


The spring catalog includes interesting and informative classes such as:
• Landscaping for Beginners, Countertop Painting, Women and Power Tools and other lawn and home improvement classes
• Quick, Delicious Mexican Dishes and other cooking classes
• Zumba, yoga and dance classes
• Knitting and craft classes
• Fiddling for Rank Beginners, Beginning Harmonica and other arts and music classes
• Computer classes
• Photography classes
• Online classes you can take from home
• Beginning Spanish, Ojibwe and Tagalog language classes
• And many more!
